Resurrection Sunday opens with darkness — not just the early morning darkness of John 20, but the emotional darkness the disciples felt after Jesus’ crucifixion. The week that began with shouts of “Hosanna!” ended with betrayal, brutality, and the death of the One they believed was the Messiah.

Into this darkness steps Mary Magdalene, a woman transformed by Jesus’ deliverance and devoted to Him with her whole heart. She rises early, longing simply to be near Him, only to discover the stone rolled away. Assuming grave robbery, she runs to Peter and John, who race to the tomb. John arrives first, sees the grave clothes, enters, and — for the first time — believes. He understands: Jesus is alive.

Mary, still overwhelmed with grief, remains at the tomb. Even the appearance of angels doesn’t break through her sorrow. But everything changes when Jesus Himself appears and speaks her name: “Mary.” In that moment, she recognizes Him — the risen Lord who knows His sheep by name.

The resurrection is not just an event; it is a personal invitation. Jesus is alive, and He calls each of us to see and believe, to trust Him fully, and to seek Him above all else.

1. Seek Jesus First — Like Mary

Mary went to the tomb “while it was still dark.”
Her devotion challenges us:

• Is Jesus the first One we turn to?
• Do we seek Him with urgency and love?
• Does He hold first place in our mornings, our decisions, our hearts?

The resurrection calls us to reorder our priorities around the living Christ.

2. Believe the Evidence — Like John

John saw and believed.
He didn’t yet understand everything, but he trusted what God revealed.

Faith often begins this way:

• We don’t need perfect understanding to trust Jesus.
• We respond to what God shows us and grow from there.
• The resurrection is the foundation of our faith — the empty tomb demands a response.

3. Bring Your Pain to Jesus — Like Mary

Mary wept at the tomb, overwhelmed by loss.
Jesus didn’t rebuke her — He met her in her grief.

The risen Christ still meets us in:

• sorrow
• confusion
• fear
• disappointment

He asks us, “Whom are you seeking?”
He invites us to bring our brokenness to Him.

4. Recognize That Jesus Knows You by Name

Mary recognized Jesus the moment He spoke her name.
The resurrection is personal.
Jesus knows:

• your name
• your story
• your wounds
• your fears
• your future

He calls each of us into a living relationship with Him.

5. Respond to the Risen Christ

The resurrection demands a response.
Jesus died for the sins of the whole world, but salvation is received personally.

The call is simple:
See. Believe. Follow.

John 20:1-16

1 Now the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. 5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord

11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”

She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”

She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!”

She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
